Jun 09Motion-X GPS + WordPress Plugin
It seems that the Motion-X GPS newspage decided to link to me after I dropped them a note about how I used it. Woho!
Hello Motion-X GPS visitor!
Since then, I’ve gotten a few mails asking questions on how I have generated this, and I figured I might aswell make a blog post about it to make sure you get the information straight away.
First of all, I setup sharing in Motion-X GPS with my own personal e-mail address. This makes sure I get both a KMZ and a GPX file mailed to me after every “workout” (after choosing to share it, ofcourse).
Secondly, I am using the WordPress plugin XML Google Maps to generate the map, elevation and speed profile from the GPX file. There are more data that can be generated using this plugin, but it doesn’t fit my theme and has very little or no impact on what I want to see and compare to stay motivated.
The plugin is very easy to install and use, and ofcourse, you are not limited to biking with this application. You can walk, drive your MC, ride your rollerbladess, ski or snowboard. I’ve even done some tests while driving our car just to get some speed- and elevation profiles around the area (but decided not to publish it here).
Anyway, I hope this is the information you were after – and please, leave a comment if you were sent here from the Motion-X website or if you came in elsewhere and find this information useful!

Using the WordPress plugin to embed the Google map and then using the GPX file from MotionX-GPS is great! That is very clever. Thanks for passing on that knowledge.

Hej,
Sorry, you have to have your own dedicated stand alone wordpress installation to be able to use plugins. WordPress.com does not allow plugins for various security reasons (as they are a shared site with alot of users). More details about this can be found in their FAQ: http://support.wordpress.com/plugins/

Han: Great information. Like the MotionX.
One of my challenges have been is after few miles MotionX turns off on it’s own and stops tracking the data. Wondering if you or any other reader had similar issues.

Hi Hans
What are you using to attach the iphone to the bike?
Is the phone securely fixed so that it is possible to go off-road? Have you tested that, or do you mostly use roads? I’m looking for a long time now for a sturdy phone holder – so far no luck.
Thanks!
Lars

Thanks for describing how you did this. I was hoping that it wasn’t a WP plugin – wanted something more versatile that could be used to create the graphs.

Hi Hans,
I arrived via Motion-X’s Website and I love what you’ve done. I also have a WordPress blog that I’ve set up to upload my .gpx files to.
I was wondering a few things:
1. How did you get the dotted lines at intervals? Did you just edit the plugin to add the ‘chg’ parameter of the Google Chart API?
2. How did you get the summary at the top of the page, was this entered manually?
Regards
Rich
